I.D.: General: dark, stout, conical bill; beady, black eyes; black legs; no wing bars. Breeding male: royal blue overall. Breeding female: soft brown overall; faintly streaked flanks. Size: L 51/2 in. (14 cm). Range: very rare migrant and summer visitor in the southern U.S. Rockies. Habitat: forest edges, shrubby fields, orchards, overgrown pastures and hedgerows in the eastern lowlands. |
