I.D.: Breeding male: black cap and bib; rufous shoulder; black whisker; light gray face and underparts; black bill; white outer tail feathers; black on the central and terminal area of the tail (like an inverted T). Breeding female: similar patterning, but not as bold; gray plumage. Size: L 6 in. (15 cm). Range: rare migrant in the Yellowstone area; local breeder on the eastern slopes of the southern Canadian and U.S. Rockies. Habitat: shortgrass prairies, native grasslands, pastures and agricultural areas. |
