I.D.: Breeding male: chestnut nape; black underparts; yellow throat; black cap; white eyebrow; mottled brown upperparts; white outer tail feathers; black central and terminal tail feathers; white undertail coverts. Breeding female: might show a chestnut nape; mottled brown overall; light breast streaks.

Size: L 51/2 in. (14 cm).

Range: rare migrant and local breeder along the eastern slopes of the Rockies.

Habitat: In migration: grasslands, prairies and meadows from the lowlands to the subalpine.
