Melanerpes erythrocephalus

I.D.: Sexes similar. Adult: flaming red head and throat; black back, wings and tail; white belly, rump and inner wing patches. Immature: brown head, back, wings and tail; slight brown streaking on the breast.

Size: L 71/2-81/2 in. (19-22 cm).

Range: rare migrant and summer resident in Colorado (east of the Continental Divide); very rare westward and elsewhere in the Rockies.

Habitat: lowlands; favors riparian deciduous forests.
