I.D.: Sexes similar: small owl; yellow eyes: light-colored bill; ear tufts; vertically streaked underparts; dark upperparts; gray-brown phase is most likely in the Rockies. Size: L 8-10 in. (20-25 cm); female is slightly larger. Range: rare resident along the front ranges of the southern U.S. Rockies. Habitat: open deciduous woodlands and riparian forests with a dense understorey, mostly in the foothills. |
