I.D.: Sexes similar: thin, dark bill; clean, light underparts; sandy upperparts; white forehead; black forecrown; thin, black eye line; light legs. In flight: white wing stripe; dark tail band. Size: L 8-91/2 in. (20-24 cm). Range: rare spring and fall migrant in the central and southern U.S. Rockies; breeds in small numbers on the high plains in Montana, within sight of the Rockies. Habitat: short-grass prairie, heavily grazed pastures, mudflats and shorelines. |
