Black-bellied Plover

Pluvialis squatarola

I.D.: Sexes similar: short, black bill; long, black legs. Breeding: black face, breast and belly; light gray crown; white shoulders; black back spotted with white; white undertail coverts. Non-breeding: gray-brown upperparts; light underparts. In flight: black 'wing pits'; white tail.

Size: L 101/2-13 in. (27-33 cm).

Range: rare spring and fall migrant in low-elevation passes throughout the Rockies.

Habitat: edges of lakes and reservoirs; occasionally on plowed fields, short meadows or pasturelands.
