
Limosa haemastica
I.D.: Sexes similar: long, slightly upturned bill; white rump; long, black legs; black tail. Breeding: heavily barred, chestnut underparts; dark-brown upperparts. Non-breeding: sandy brown body. In flight: black 'wing pits' and wing linings; light flight feathers. Size: L 14-16 in. (36-41 cm). Range: rare spring migrant along the eastern slopes of the Rockies and in the Canadian Rockies; very rare fall migrant throughout the Rockies. Habitat: shorelines of prairie marshes. |
