Stilt Sandpiper

Calidris himantopus

I.D.: Sexes similar: long neck; long, yellow-green legs; medium-sized bill. Breeding: red 'ear' patch; vertically streaked head and neck; horizontally streaked breast and belly. Non-breeding: gray overall; dark upperparts; light underparts.

Size: L 71/2-9 in. (19-23 cm).

Range: rare and accidental spring migrant throughout the Rockies; uncommon to common fall migrant in the northern Rockies.

Habitat: lakeshores, ponds, sewage lagoons, wet meadows and mudflats.
