I.D.: Sexes similar: straight, long, dark bill; chunky body; white rump. Breeding: cinnamon overall; dark upperparts; light barring on the flanks; broad white bands on the tail feathers; occasionally has a white belly. Non-breeding: gray upperparts; dirty white underparts; white eyebrow. Size: L 11-12 in. (28-30 cm). Range: locally uncommon to rare migrant in low-elevation passes throughout the Rockies. Habitat: along lakeshores, shallow marshes and mudflats in the montane and the subalpine; usually in flocks with Long-billed Dowitchers. |
