Whooping Crane

Grus americana

I.D.: Sexes similar. Adult: very tall, large bird; black wing primaries; all-white plumage; bare red skin on the forehead and the chin; long, pointed bill; black legs. Immature: orange-red head and upper neck. In flight: neck and legs are extended.

Size: L 50-60 in. (127-152 cm); W 78-90 in. (198-229 cm).

Range: accidental throughout the Rockies; historically rare (19th century); uncommon in Grays Lake NWR in Idaho.

Habitat: In migration: wetlands, croplands and fen areas.
