I.D.: Breeding male: dark head with a white eye patch; dark neck and upperparts; white belly; pink bill with a dark base; long, dark central tail feathers. Non-breeding male: white head with a dark eye patch; white neck and belly; dark breast; white patches on the back; pink bill with a dark base; long, dark central tail feathers. Breeding female: short tail feathers; gray bill; dark head, throat, wings and back; white ear patch; white underparts. Non-breeding female: similar, but generally lighter, especially on the head. Size: L 17-20 in. (43-51 cm). Range: rare spring and fall migrant throughout the Rockies; very rare winter visitor to the southern U.S. Rockies. Habitat: deep lakes, reservoirs, large rivers and large marshes in the montane. |
