I.D.: Male: dark green, rounded head; dark breast; white belly and flanks; light gray back; dark hindquarters; blue, black-tipped bill; golden eyes. Female: brown overall; well-defined white patch at the base of the bill; rounded or flat-topped head. In flight: long white wing stripe. Size: L 16-19 in. (41-48 cm). Range: very rare spring and fall migrant throughout the Rockies. Habitat: lakes, large marshes and reservoirs, usually far from the shore. |
