I.D.: Male: rufous head; cream forehead; rosy breast; gray sides; black hind end; dark feet; black-tipped, gray bill. Female: predominantly brown head and breast with rufous hints; black-tipped, blue bill. In flight: large, white wing patch. Size: L 161/2-20 in. (42-51 cm). Range: rare to uncommon migrant throughout the Rockies. Habitat: shallow wetlands, lake edges and ponds in the montane and the lower subalpine; usually mixed in flocks of American Wigeons. |
